During my class with IIUM Final Year medical students today, there are several key points I shared:History taking has different goals at different places & different timeline. .For example…When you are taking history in ED, your objectives are to make diagnosis & to decide whether patients can be treated outpatient or require admission..When you take history post operatively, the objectives are to detect possible early complications, responses to treatment & fitness to discharge..For exam, the most important is to get the right diagnosis & possible differential diagnosis. No point of asking too many questions but they can’t help you to justify the diagnosis and differentials listed..#iium #lecturer#medicalstudent #medicaleducation

Medical School Clearing AdviceLast year the following had places in clearing:◾️Buckingham Medicine Clearing (private med school)◾️St George’s◾️King's◾️Hull York◾️Queen Mary's Malta (private)Then there were some like UCL and Leicester who on clearing day offered places via their waitlist and Sheffield who, if you called them, and had the grades offered an interview (they did not formally appear in clearing). This year lots more medical schools will use their waitlist rather than clearing- which is more cost effective for them.Remember if you enter clearing you are still competing with a large number of people for a few spaces, you WILL need to attend an interview (online usually) and most will require a competitive UCAT score as well good A level grades. But a small chance is better than no chance!#clearing #medicalschool #ucas

In light of the recent Supreme Court Ruling. Two Things1) Immensely proud of my Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) Chapter's activities that we could share with other student organizations at the recent American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Future Physicians for Change National Conference. Our chapter's poster, outlining how to establish partnerships with Latinx and other community organizations as medical students, while integrating the resources of our medical school into the community, earned Best in Community Development and Service.2) This shows the importance of equity-based admissions. Respectfully, students who do not come from underrepresented backgrounds are less likely to do this work and are less likely to continue onward as physicians doing this work. Had our chapter not done this work, it would not have gotten done. Our communities would have been left an afterthought, as they had been for the decades before we developed connection and trust with our community partners. Had my friends in LMSA and I not been admitted, both due to our academic qualifications AS WELL AS our identities being so central to our passions, the hundreds of community members we reached would not have been helped.A message to students applying for medical school. Please, explicitly state how your underrepresented identities tie into your goals and motivations for being a physician. Respectful medical education institutions will still hold the importance of diversity in their admissions process - please give them the materials to do so. #medical #education #community #future
