Mary Hazel Maldonado, 70, of Amarillo, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 6, 2021 at Power Church, 1344 SE 10th St. in Amarillo with Pastor Aaron Delosantos officiating with guest speaker Spike Maldonado. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.
Mary was born February 26, 1951 in Amarillo, Texas. She attended James Bowie Jr. HighSchool. She married Joel Maldonado on April 15, 1967 and enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Mary was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, and enjoyed watching them every Sunday with family in attendance. Being with family enjoying the Cowboys or a Sunday picnic were her greatest pleasures. Mary was an excellent cook with her specialties being chili smothered burritos and goulash. She watched the cooking channel and was always anxious to put her own touch on a new recipe. She enjoyed gardening and always had her yard looking good. But the most important thing in Mary’s life was her family. She loved her children and grandchildren. Mary was known to speak her mind and you always knew how she felt about something.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Adela Ortiz; a sister Rita Rodarte; a brother Johnny Rangel; and a grandson Daniel Luera.
Survivors include her husband Joel of Amarillo; three sons, Ricky Maldonado of Amarillo, Joel Simon Maldonado (Lizeht) of Brownsville, Texas and Michael Maldonado (Juanita) of Amarillo; two daughters, Olivia Murguia (Joe) of Amarillo and Cindy Maldonado of Amarillo; two brothers, Robert Ortiz (Carol) of Mesa, Arizona, and Tony Saavedra of Amarillo; and three sisters, Margaret Valdez (Benito) of Amarillo, Lisa Leos (Howard) of Houston, Texas and Linda Alcala of Amarillo; 15 grandchildren, Ashley Mejia, Jon Mejia, Jacob Romero, Alexis Murguia, Marisa Luera, Daniel Luera, Marcos Luera, Natalie Maldonado, Jacob Maldonado, Brianna Maldonado, Brileen Maldonado, Faith Maldonado, Matthew Martinez, Emilio Maldonado and Julia Maldonado; and eightgreat-grandchildren.
